Administrators have the ability to configure courses. When setting up your SMS for the first time, or when you add a new course to Moodle, an administrator will need to come into the Course tab and assign a status to that course before it will become usable in the SMS.

There are three course states. Here is what each does:

Open — These courses are visible to staff users in the SMS as well as students during registration. When students go to the Student Registration page and reach the Courses screen, they'll be prompted to select from a list of open courses.

Closed — ****These courses are not visible on the student registration interface, but still allow registration for staff users. Clerical or administrative users can enroll students into Closed courses through the staff interface or search for students in those courses.

Hidden — These courses will not be visible in any course list for staff or students. This is typically best for courses that are no longer in use or are non-tracking courses (e.g. "staff breakroom").

If you create an enrollment while a course is Open or Closed, and then later change the state of that course to Hidden, the enrollment will remain visible on existing students and they will not be unenrolled. Course state only affects new enrollments into a course.
